  Insurance tale
Posted by: Mike J - 06-10-2016, 11:45 AM - Forum: Insurance and dealers - Replies (1)

Hi,
I have 4 bikes but only 3 are insured as the 4th is in about a hundred pieces scattered about my house. But this is by the by.

My newer bike, an NC750X, is insured by Devitt as this was at the time a much cheaper option than the previous insurer. Anyway about a year ago I bought an outfit and thought I would add it to the policy. Unfortunately it turns out that the insurance I have on the NC is a one bike policy and I couldn't add another. It was far too costly to cancel and take out another policy. The solution was to search for a classic policy as the outfit qualifies as a classic. Found the really nice people at Peter James who quite happily insured it and as I was on the phone I asked them about adding my 1974 Honda XL250 MotoSport to the policy which they were quite happy to do and the cost was very reasonable. The reason I mention the XL is because I was unable to insure it with the likes of Carole Nash and other big companies because it didn't show up on their list and according to them there was no XL250 from Honda that old. It was even suggested by the chap at CN that the bike was a grey import. NO IT WASN'T as it was ordered through a Honda dealer and came from Japan (as all Hondas did back then) and I built it when it arrived at the dealers. I did ask about adding a modern bike to the policy later and was told that it could be done but we didn't go into details. As others have found out cancelling a newish policy is a very expensive business and not worth the cost. Anyway this year when the insurance came up for renewal on the NC I rang PJ and asked about adding it to the other two. They could have done this but the NC is not garaged as I use it every day and don't have a garage in the garden and it is just too much hassle to get to the garage I use to house the other bikes. So for another year I have 2 policies, 1 for the modern bike which is not garaged and is horribly expensive because I renewed instead of checked around and 1 with the 2 classic bikes which is very reasonable.

I find motor insurance a minefield and can't for the life of me see why a search online can produce quotes for the same bike and rider that vary from very reasonable to horribly expense. How do the more expensive ones survive or are there a lot of rich people out there who have money to throw away? One would think that the insurance business would be very competitive and that competition would drive the prices down, especially now that we have comparison websites.

Rant over.

Keep safe
Mike

Hi to all on the HOC forum.

I have joined the forum for information on restoring an old Honda I used to own (if I can locate it) and if I can't find the original or it's been scrapped, I'll be buying one to restore.  The bike in question is (don't laugh) a Honda MT5 that I owned when I was 16. I'm now 48 and I am having that mid life crisis that us boys go through wanting to relive my youth  Big Grin

I hope to make some new friends and gain some knowledge when it comes to restoring my little moped.

Regards,
Steve.

Big Grin Hi there from a Newbie in Dorset!

Hi everyone,

I'm retired and live a few miles from the New Forest. Here's a very brief rundown of my history on two wheels.

I passed my motorcycle test in the summer of '65 on a BSA Bantam and bought my first Honda in April '71 - a shiny new CB250K2!  Since I started riding, I've owned seven Hondas as well as many other bikes and scooters. Currently in my garage I've a CB1100EX, a PCX 125, a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic and an Aprilia Sport City 125.

I hold a silver badge from Harley-Davidson's Rider's Edge and have passed the IAM tests for both motorcycle and car.

And finally....:  Huh My wife keeps asking why I've got 4 bikes when I/we can only ride one at a time....   Big Grin

Atrick.

  Hi there

Hi there, my name is Kerry and I am based in Weymouth. I have been riding for over 38 years and have owned a variety of Hondas in that time  - including a CB550-4 and several CX500s (both standard, custom, and Eurosport).

My main ride at the moment is a 30 year old BMW R80RT, which I love!

Currently the only Honda I actually own is a tatty 1991 Helix 250 that I have imported from the Channel Islands - yes, I know - its a scooter!  Wink

I am thinking of maybe popping along to the National for the day, probably on the Saturday - assuming day tickets are available on the gate?
- and I am not at risk of being lynched for arriving on a scooter!  Confused

Cheers,

Kerry

  Modifying passenger leg room CBR250
Posted by: frogeyepete - 31-08-2016, 12:09 PM - Forum: General Nattering - Replies (2)

Took my wife out on the bike yesterday and after about 45 minutes she was complaining about her knees hurting. She has been on the back of my bikes before, but usually half an hour max. Does anyone know of a way to make more leg room for the passenger. It seems difficult to lower the foot rest on the exhaust side without modifying the exhaust tubing. I thought that possibly a higher passenger seat, but I guess it would have to be custom made.

My better half is fairly short but we are both in our mid 60's and are not as flexible as we used to be. Shy

Hi Guys,
One of the bikes I own is a 1981 Honda 125T which has been in Spain since 1983. It has just 3,500 miles on the clock. All original a few rust spots here and the there and a small ding in the tank when the only other owner fell off driving down to Mallorca 33 years ago!
Now it comes back to the UK, never been registered in Mallorca but has an export certificate, so i need to change it back to  a UK V5.

Hi, I guess I am one of those "born again" bikers. 1967 bought a Honda 50 (not sure it counts as a motorbike, but it could get up to a fair lick downhill on a dual carriageway with the wind behind it). This unfortunately ended up under a lorry ( fortunately with me not on it). That cut short my initial interest in two wheeled motorized transport and I move on to an Austin A40 Farina, followed by a Frogeye Sprite and a Trojan bubble car. About 10 years ago in Spain a friend offered me his 70cc Honda 2 stroke, and to my amazement, she who must be obeyed, let me buy it. It went like the clappers but had oversized bicycle tyres and brakes to match. Managed to persuade the boss that a Honda CBF125 had better brakes and tyres and would be safer. There was a fantastic part exchange deal going at the time and she agreed. Bought a CBR125 for the UK but it struggled to keep up with the traffic so I suggested a CBR250 would be safer (safety is always a good selling point I find). She said, "I suppose you will want to upgrade your bike in Spain." "No my love I said for Spain a 125 is fine." It was shortly after that I purchased a 250 in Spain. I am sorry to say not a Honda but the Suzuki Inazuma twin. Main reason was price, but I had always wanted a twin cylinder bike. The Suzuki is less powerful than the Honda, but much more forgiving. Wink

PS Just had the Honda's exhaust heat shield chromium plated by Fox Plating of Sydenham SE London (£55). To me it is a big improvement on the matt silver painted ones that the bikes come with.

Hi, new member introducing himself! I live in Essex, love motorised vehicles and currently own a CL160, latest purchase, also a Triumph Street Triple, a BSA Bantam rigid( for trials )and a couple of cars. I am a welder by trade, but do a lot of turning and milling for tools and repairs for vehicles. Had a very special TLR200 until recently which was very effective in trials.  Hope to see some of you about!!   Dave
