Honda CG125 Timing and Point Settings

Evening All,

I need some advice and help re my Honda CG125.

First off, I am a newbie and not fully aware of everything there is to know about motorbikes, that being said, I know the very basics.

I am having some issues trying to set the right timing and point location on my CG125.

Long story short, it was running fine, but I wasn't getting a great deal of power when out and about. It would chug along at 40-45 max and there would be short, sharp bursts where you could feel the old girl 'wanting' to go faster, then it wold fade. Struggling I guess, despite being all the way on the throttle.

It is a 1980 CG125, cafe racer project bike, tbh it runs fine, its road legal, all 6v electrics are hunky dory and I've replaced the battery and fitted the indicators, all working nicely. Lights become brighter when you increase the revs, so I assume the charging system is working too.

I did the stupid thing and decied to mess about with the flywheel. I wanted to check all the points were on point and everything OK. There didn't seem to be much of a gap, so I sanded the contact points, cleaned up the inside a little and reset. This is how I have reset them.

Lined up F with the centre line and the points are just beginning to open when you turn the flywheel anticlockwise. Keep turning an inch or so to the T mark and they are fully open. I have some metal measuring gauges (forget the name) so will check the gap, but by eyes, I'd say it's about 1mm.

I tried kicking - originally went first or second kick - now nothing, just a tickle of life from the engine and that's your lot. Feeling pretty annoyed as I've clearly buggered something, but can't see what. I didn't check the settings before, but the above that I have done is correct isn't it? I watched various videos and they say at F the points just need to start opening and T fully open. 

Do I need to widen the gap, shorten the gap?

I don't want to keep kicking at it in case it does some damage. It's also worth mentioning that when I got the bike the kick start is seriously vicious, as in the first kick you get a nasty kick back, the kind that almost shatters your ankle - first time I learned the hard way! Usually after round 1 she behaves and starts up nicely. 

All in all, she looks stunning at present, cafe racer style, passed MOT, runs as well as can be expected for an older bike, but I just want to get more power from her, I have also changed the spark plug, which may help. The problem now is the thing won't start! When originally it was!   Dodgy
